About SPHN

The Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) was mandated 2016 by the State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI) and by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) to develop a Swiss Personalized Health Network (SPHN).

During the period 2017–2020, priority is given to the development of a nationally coordinated data infrastructure ensuring data interoperability of local and regional information systems with special emphasis on clinical data management systems enabling effective exchange of patient data (e.g. disease phenotypes).

Subsequently, funding of research projects will become more and more important. In the long-term, public health and healthy citizen data will also be integrated. Overall, a national coordinated data infrastructure will optimize the use of health data for personalized health related research.

Further information can be found in the Factsheet and on the SERI page about SPHN.

The integration of all existing relevant actors involved in personalized health is key to the success of the SPHN initiative, in particular in a small country like Switzerland.

As a consequence, SPHN will link with existing projects and organisation such as the Swiss Clinical Trial Organization (SCTO), Swiss Biobanking Platform (SBP), Swiss School of Public Health (SSPH+), swissethics and the Human Biomonitoring Cohort Project (HBCP).

At the international level, SPHN represents SAMS in the Executive Committee of the International Consortium for Personalised Medicine (ICPerMed).

Furthermore, in 2019, SPHN was selected to join an international group of 22 leading initiatives in the field of genomics and personalized health, coordinated by the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH).
